Consume, obey, consume, obey, consume, obey…
The vicious cycle society is perpetuating in consumer culture is pushing us dangerously closer to a future that will be the amalgamation of They Live meets Interstellar. We have been tricked into believing we need the next latest-greatest gadget so much that we trample over one another during Black Friday Sales, and look at the Earth as collateral damage so we can keep up with trends.
Our culture leads us to live with a “lack mentality” that forces us to feel that if we are not keeping up with trend, that we are somehow inadequate. Happiness is found through the consumption of the material, and exploring the immaterial, the world within, is somehow heretical or “weird”.
True fulfillment comes through relationships, experience, love, communion with nature…George Carlin once stated, “trying to be happy by accumulating possessions is like trying to satisfy hunger by taping sandwiches all over your body”.
This vicious cycle is pulling life here on Earth closer and closer to it’s expiration date. Our population is growing at an insurmountable speed, and there just isn’t enough resources to satisfy this growing population. Change is not an option, it is our only hope if we are to survive the shape of things to come. We must wake up, and see the damage our need for material has caused, and change our trajectory towards creation instead of consumption.
Together, we must Wake Up from our mass slumber, and come to understand…”When the Last Tree Is Cut Down, the Last Fish Eaten, and the Last Stream Poisoned, You Will Realize That You Cannot Eat Money”.
Awareness is powerful, and we are more powerful than we truly realize. Together we can create change, and it is only by banding together that we will.
