DoubleBlind is a biannual print magazine and media company covering timely, untold stories about the expansion of psychedelics around the globe.

Their new course teaches you how to grow your own mushrooms at home with live access to experts in the field.

Medicinal mushrooms are increasingly making their way into mainstream markets and cafés as they offer an array of healing modalities. Options like reishi, chaga and lion’s mane, to name a few, are being added to elixirs and supplements. As we find ourselves in these interesting times, Double Blind’s “DB 101: How To Grow Mushrooms” is an at-home/beginner-friendly course to inspire more people to take their health in their own hands in an independent and self-sufficient way. We’re seeing systems crumble before our eyes as a new reality is paved.

The human to fungi relationship stems back to the very beginning of our evolution and now we’re beginning to see this friendship deepen in our daily lives again. It’s not so much about creating something new as it is about returning to our roots.

Why Grow Your Own?

With an accelerated interest in the pharmaceutical industry and academia, many civilians have voiced concerns regarding the protection of medicinal mushrooms to ensure fair access in the future. However, the art of growing mushrooms at home ensures a deep sense of quality that may not always be accessible when sought out from external sources. Not to mention, it is easy, cost-effective, and proves to be the ultimate learning activity to embark on amidst quarantine times.

The cost of medicinal mushrooms can reach approximately $35 per eighth of an ounce (or $10 per gram). This all depends on where you are buying from and the quality may not always be the same. In comparison, Double Blind suggests, with $15-$20 you can purchase mushroom spores that produce well over 100 times the amount of mushrooms you could buy for the same price.

While time has opened up for many of us, the quarantine era is reminding us about the power within our hands—especially when it comes to the organizations we support. We’re seeing more people opt for small and local businesses rather than large corporations. The power found within a community goes beyond financial gain and brings closer to the products we create rather than being a creation of the products we consume.

The safety and peace of mind that comes from growing our own food and medicine is not only empowering but brings us together in a way where we can share our harvest and embrace what it truly means to exist in community.

Mushroom fun fact comin’ at ya 🍄Did you know that the largest living organism on Earth is a fungus? That’s right, Amarilla solidipes, a specific honey fungus, covers more than 2,200 acres of the Malheur National Forest in Oregon. While reportedly a tasty mushroom to pair with spaghetti, it is a danger to gardens and forests where it kills plants and trees. 2,200 acres, however, may seem a bit ambitious, which is why we’re teaching fungi fanatics to grow their own (less invasive) mushrooms on a much smaller scale. You really only need about a space about the size of a plastic shoebox to get your grow going. Curious to learn more? Head to the link in our bio for details on DB 101: How To Grow Mushrooms! Registration is open until May 12th!
