This Luxe Vegan-Leather Accessories Brand is Revolutionizing Creative Lifestyles

Launched in November of 2018, BRINN is an Asbury Park-based accessories brand thoughtfully designed for all creative lifestyles and inspired by real-life problems. With a focus on quality, innovation and detail – all of BRINN’s products are made from a water-resistant and durable luxe vegan leather, making their line 100% cruelty-free.

We recently had a chat with BRINN’s creator and designer, Ciara Perrone, to discuss life, photography, the journey into launching BRINN, and more!

When did you first fall in love with photography?

Every since I could remember I was running around with my mother’s film cameras & just snapping away. She would take the film out for me to play but now I am very curious what those photographs would look like. I remember a brief period in my childhood where I decided I wanted to go to an Ivy League school and be a doctor because I had heard somewhere from someone that was how to be rich & successful. I’m really glad my inner child pulled through to help me rediscover my first love & passion for photography.

How do you feel this medium has helped change your life?

I believe creativity of some form is crucial to every living being, it is what truly makes us whole. Photography is my number one creative outlet. It has helped me get to know myself better than ever. Photography has always kept me dreaming, scheming & creating and I am eternally grateful for that.

What has been the most profound moment you’ve captured with your camera thus far on your journey?

It would be really hard to pick one photo or moment when I feel like there have been so many profound ones! I am definitely more of a story teller than a documentary photographer. The moments I tend to be most drawn to are ones where I really took an idea that lived in my head and brought it to life through a photo. There is something about them that feels meditative yet also slightly unnerving and unworldly to me. Those are the photographs where I see myself the most in them.

How did the concept for Brinn come to be?

In the Summer of 2016, I was taking the train from NJ to NY to shoot for a well-known fashion label. I was trying out a new camera bag (I was constantly trying new ones) and it was probably the worst one yet. Big, bulky, poorly designed for commuting and functionality and far from stylish. I just wanted a product that was thoughtfully designed and didn’t look like a men’s hiking backpack. What I really wanted ethically, stylistically & functionally just didn’t exist. That night when I got home, I drew a tiny sketch of my first design on a post-it note and everything continued to manifest from there. From my memory, it’s the only time I can think of where I had an idea and acted on it immediately without over thinking and self doubt. It all just started to form naturally.

Where did the name come from?

Brinn is my middle name! Naming the brand was probably one of the most difficult decisions for me in the beginning stages. Everything I had initially come up with didn’t feel right. I wanted to always feel connected to the brand. That’s where Brinn came from.

Your Instagram and branding is so unique, and inspiring! How would you describe Brinn as a lifestyle?

Thank you so much! Brinn is essentially an extension of myself, so it is my lifestyle that takes physical form via Brinn. The products I design are put into production to solve issues I personally deal with, but it seems as though a lot of people’s lifestyles line up with Brinn! I want to look good and feel good while living my life, so Brinn is here to help you look good and feel good while you live your life. As for the branding, it naturally comes since this company is so close to my heart. The personality and story behind Brinn is my personality and my story: it is bold, it is imaginative, it is dreamy, it is sexy, it is professional but never takes itself too seriously.

What inspired you to use vegan leather, and why is this important to you?

I think one of the key factors to designing a successful & meaningful new product is to make sure you are creating something that directly solves a problem for yourself first. Following that, is it something that will make the world a better place, even if in a small way? I had just started to be conscious about materials and what the things we consume on a daily basis meant when I began Brinn. I personally wanted a product that looked sleek and cool but I could also feel good about wearing so that is why I chose Vegan Leather. It is a strong, durable and water-resistant leather alternative and the industry was lacking in options for those of us who would prefer a cruelty-free product. We deserve choices and to feel good about the products we choose to buy. There are still a lot of ethical ways that aren’t necessarily vegan (vintage, sustainably sourced leather, etc) and any form of trying to be better is a step towards a more sustainable future for us all so I welcome them all.

What are the future plans for the brand as it continues to evolve?

We have plans of expanding the products we offer and I am so excited! I never wanted to put Brinn in a box and that shows with the new line we are working on. I can’t say too much more at the moment but there are definitely some great things in the works to get excited about.

Ideally, how would you like Brinn to make an impact on the world?

By always moving in a more sustainable direction. This is a subject that I am constantly learning about and there is always room for improvement. Brinn has big plans to leave our (small) foot print on the planet in the years to come.

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned from concept to creation to launch?

To have patience and that is still a lesson I am learning. All dreams & goals take time to achieve, especially when you are creating something from nothing. I am learning to love the process instead of racing to the finish line.

What piece of advice would you offer to someone who has a similar dream, and is hoping to launch their own product or idea into the world?

Don’t wait for the “right” moment or for when you have enough money to live out your creative pursuits. If you wait for that, you will be waiting forever. There is always some step forward you can take, even if it’s a small one, to get started.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would be it?

Don’t grow up! I mean, grow up in the sense where you can take care of business and pay your bills, but keep your mind young for as long as you can. That’s where your best ideas come from.
