The famous Ridley Scott-directed “1984” Mac ad—in which athlete, model, and actress Anya Major smashes an Orwellian propaganda film with a giant hammer— debuted during Super Bowl Halftime 32 years ago.

Its overlying message, “1984 won’t be like [George Orwell’s dystopian novel] 1984,” is ironic in retrospect, considering the tech industry’s role in our current surveillance state. Fear and anxiety pervade our culture enough to manifest themselves in the freewheeling world of GIF art.
