The Illusion of Separateness

We have become culturally programmed to believe that in order to have the proper identity we must be labeled. Christian, Jew, Muslim, black, white, gay, straight, male, female, blonde, brunette, the list is endless when it comes to the labels culture has forced us to feel that we need. The label separates us from one another, in an attempt to disguise our ultimate truth with one particular name. Separation, just as the label, is an illusion, and no matter what label you choose to wear, remember it is a choice you are making, and not what ultimately defines you. The choice boxes you in a belief, and beliefs are just as limiting as the illusion of the label. For once you believe you are one particular thing, you limit the ability to be anything else, or to expand to your infinite nature.

For the sake of convenience, I will use myself as an example. If I were to go by my culturally defined labels/name/identity, I am Jennifer Denise Sodini, 29-years-old, female, blonde hair, green eyes, in a monogamous heterosexual relationship, vegetarian, and live a spiritual lifestyle. Friends call me Jenn, family calls me Jenny, business contacts call me Jennifer, my boyfriend calls me his girlfriend, and in restaurants I order vegetarian – these are all choices, choices either made by my conscious decision, or by the names that feel best to those I associate with. When someone calls me Jenn, do I stop being Jennifer? When someone calls me a female, do I stop being human? If I dye my hair black, and am no longer blonde – does this not mean I am no longer me? If I identify with more masculine areas of interest, does this mean I am no longer female? If I choose to date a woman, does this mean that I no longer can be attracted to men? These are choices in the labels I wear, use, and identify with, but these are choices, not my ultimate identity. Ultimately…in this incarnation, I am a human being, and all the labels are just extra, and do not define me.

You are (currently) a human being. Our brains have evolved consciously enough to ponder the nature of our existence, so we are aware of the human condition. The human condition is the ability to have the knowledge of both life and death, the knowledge of both material and metaphysical concepts, the ability to embrace both the masculine and feminine sides of our personality, and unfortunately the existence of the ego can sometimes lead us to make decisions based off of superficial aesthetics that trick us into thinking we are separate from one another because of the labels we wear.

To appreciate is to live, to label is to completely define as an ultimate truth…but to think scientifically, there is no such thing as an ultimate truth, or an ultimate false. Everything that exists, is plausible until proven otherwise. Look at yourself as an expression of the universe, here to learn the nature of your existence, until it is time to take a new form. The universe, just as humanity, is ever expanding, and is infinite. While this is your current form, this is not your forever form, and the soul’s journey (if you are inclined to a spiritual way of thinking) is on a quest to transform into the formless.

To be formless in this life, is to think like Bruce Lee, and to be like water…

“You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water into the cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water into the bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water into the teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip, and it can crash. Become like water my friend.”
